Creating an Impactful Skills Video

A well-crafted skills video can be a game-changer in the recruitment process. In order to maximize the impact our skills video has, it’s important to understand exactly what coaches are looking for when they review your film. By focusing on these 4 principles, you can ensure your skills video gives coaches a clear and complete view of you as a player.

What Skills Should Be Included?

When creating your skills video, it's essential to show your competence in a variety of areas relevant to your position. Start by listing all the key skills associated with your role, and then build a collection of clips that address each skill individually. Whether you're a catcher focusing on your framing, pop time, and fielding bunts, a short-stop demonstrating arm strength and double plays, or a pitcher showcasing pitch variety and control, your skills video should offer a comprehensive view of your capabilities as a player.

Remember, it's not solely about showcasing your softball technique. Highlight other valuable attributes, like showing a hard work ethic, by performing all reps at game speed and including clips of you attempting tough plays in a game. To ensure coaches can accurately evaluate your abilities, make sure the video features camera angles that clearly capture your proper form and execution of these skills and it is obvious what aspect of your game you’re trying to highlight.

Should I Focus on Game Footage or Skills Footage?

When choosing your footage, aim to provide a complete view of your abilities as a softball player using a good mix of both game and skills footage. When we watch the films that get sent to our coaching staff, we often see players focus too hard on trying to highlight their best plays. Remember that college coaches value consistency and a well-rounded skill set. While that clip of your game-winning home run is impressive, an unedited clip of you swinging at repetitive pitches is more effective at demonstrating your reliability behind the plate.

However, game situations can still reveal aspects of your play that might be difficult to show off in practice environments. For instance, clips of diving catches, leadership on the field through communication, and quick reads can emphasize your intensity and softball IQ. The key is finding a good mix of skills clips and game clips by focusing on what aspect of your game you’re trying to highlight and finding the most effective way to display that to coaches.
