Welcome to the world of college softball recruitment, where dreams become reality, and futures are shaped. The journey from high school athlete to collegiate player is exhilarating, challenging, and filled with opportunities. As you embark on this path, it's crucial to understand the key elements that can elevate you from being a good player to a highly sought-after college prospect. In this guide, I’ll give you three tips to avoid the most common mistakes that I find when evaluating potential NMHU prospects. We’ll cover the importance of confidence, effective communication, and maintaining intensity.
As we approach our 2023 Prospect Camp, consider these insights as invaluable tools to help you impress the college coaches in attendance.
At the college level, softball becomes increasingly competitive and intense. It's in these moments that making reads and taking calculated risks can be the difference between winning and losing. These are not reckless moves but calculated strategies employed at the right moment. Let's take a closer look at the concept of calculated risks through a couple of examples.
Imagine you're on first base, and you decide to take a sizeable lead. By doing so, you're increasing the likelihood of getting out, but you're also creating an opportunity to steal second base. Coaches appreciate players who can read the game, identify weaknesses in the opponent's strategy, and exploit those opportunities. To continue the example, if you notice the opposing team isn't communicating effectively, taking that larger lead for the first time in the game might catch them off guard, minimizing the risk that you’re taking. This is what we mean by "reads" in softball – intelligently evaluating your opponent's moves and exploiting their weaknesses.
One significant hurdle for many players is playing too cautiously, especially in front of college coaches. It's entirely natural to feel the pressure when your future could be on the line. Here's the thing: college coaches are less outcome-oriented than you might think. They're interested in understanding the thought process behind your actions more than the results of those actions. For example, missing a diving catch and having to recover to retrieve the ball might have a negative impact on the game. Still, coaches recognize that it's easier to teach a slightly slower player to be faster than to teach a faster player the intuition to make that diving catch.
First and foremost, coaches are drawn to players who are not just talented but also coachable. Being coachable means being open to learning, willing to accept feedback, and adaptable in improving your game. Effective communication is the key to showing coaches you possess these qualities
Building strong and open relationships with coaches is fundamental to your success as a prospective college athlete. Coaches aren't just evaluating your physical skills; they are also assessing your coachability and character. Your interactions with coaches are the windows through which they can gauge your coachability, work ethic, and your ability to be a team player.
College coaches value positive relationships with their players because they create a cohesive and successful team environment. Players who aren't outgoing with coaches may inadvertently miss opportunities to connect and form these essential bonds.
The recruitment journey is about more than just your athletic prowess. It's about who you are as a person and a player, and that includes your ability to communicate and form meaningful connections with your coaches and teammates. If you are looking for an opportunity to connect with coaches and practice these skills, our upcoming Prospect Camp is the perfect opportunity to network with college coaches from different New Mexico schools. The coaches at our camp always keep in touch with camp attendees who show promise. Using these tips you could leave a lasting impression that opens the door for future collegiate possibilities.
It might seem tempting to conserve energy or not push yourself to the limit during training and practice. After all, nobody wants to risk exhaustion or potential injury, right? However, it's vital to understand that coaches scrutinize every detail when evaluating prospective players. Your level of intensity in training directly reflects your work ethic and competitive drive. Not going at max intensity can raise concerns about your dedication to the sport and your willingness to give your all when it matters most.
In the competitive landscape of college athletics, mediocrity is not an option. Coaches are searching for athletes who consistently push their boundaries. A culture of relentless effort creates a positive feedback loop, inspiring everyone on the team to work harder, aim higher, and reach their full potential.
While it's easy to overlook the importance of effort in training, it's precisely what can set you apart in the recruitment process. Coaches are on the lookout for players who demonstrate their commitment not just in games but in every aspect of their training. This means going at maximum intensity during drills, practices, and conditioning. Showcasing your unwavering effort indicates that you're not just in it to win games but to continually improve and achieve greatness
In the world of college softball, where talent abounds, it's often the intangibles that set players apart. Confidence, effective communication, and unwavering effort define the athletes who thrive in the collegiate realm. The recruitment process is not solely about who you are today but who you have the potential to become.
